Quick hairstyle-fohawk

Okay, I still don't have a nice camera. I've been using my cellphone and computer camera. Below are pics of my fohawk (a mohawk without the shaved sides), a last minute hair style for me. After I washed my hair, I pinned up both sides with bobby pins. I also put in eco styler gel, and conditioner. One issue I had with this style is, the two textures on my transitioning hair. Part of each strand is stark straight and the other looks wavy/fro. So it looked strange. I have to decide how long I will keep my relaxed hair. Right now, I am waiting for more length. So I twisted the ends, and untwisted in the morning, to add texture to the straight parts.

My bangs didn't turn out well, so I made a bump and clipped it back. Then I wore it with a bangs pulled to the side and clipped with a bow, for a new look. Below are some pics. Sorry if they are grainy.

There's a new hairstyle in town....new to me anyway!

Twist out is my new hair style for the week. Let me post a pic. Later I will post a tutorial.
Day 1- I wasn't sure how to style my hair, so I put a black hair flower on one side and clipped my bangs to the side.
I took a picture of the back so you can see the texture. I was hoping for a little more texture, but I can make this work.
Day 2- I let my bangs hang loose and put a colorful hair clip on the other side.

******Styles we've done so far!******

Braid while dry
It's been about 4 or 5 weeks that I've been transitioning, and my sister did the big chop only weeks before. She has done many more hairstyles than me. So I really have to get some new flavor, soon. I don't have all the pics yet, but here are 5 styles.

Individual braids:
1. Adds Length to hair
2. Really easy to style
3. No fuss
4. Takes time to do

In the pictures below the hair has 4 large "twisties" or twists held in place by a bobby pins. Then, a scarf can be added. (I like it better without the scarf, though it did match her outfit.)

This was a last minute hairstyle. I parted the hair in back to make 2 twisties going up into ponytails. Then the front was a loose twist out.

This is the wash and go look. I love it!

Straw set- classy and sassy!! I swear it  took years off my age. Try and guess how old I am. (By the by it is cheating to look at my profile.) I'm just kidding, and a little afraid of the numbers I might receive.

Straw set how to that lasts about 10-14 days

I used a straw set hair style, because it is a protective style. I especially need protective styles for my hair, because I am transitioning. Right now I have 2 different hair types on the same strand, meaning part of my hair has been straightened by a relaxer and the other part is natural. My hair could break easier where these 2 types of hair meet. So the straw set is great, because it leaves the hair with the same texture. Also, it is a less fuss hair style, and that's what I'm looking for.

Things I needed for the straw set:
  1. Drinking Straws (Cut length based on your hair length)
  2. Setting lotion- I used Bronner Bros wrapping foam because it doesn't have alcohol
  3. Styling gel- I used Eco Styler Olive Oil Styling Gel-Alcohol free
  4. Bobby pins
  5. Clips or something to separate the hair into four
  6. Wide tooth comb
  7. Oil
  8. Leave-in conditioner- I used Bronner Bros moisturizer with caster oil
Step 1: Wash and deep condition hair. Don't fully dry hair.

Step 2:  Part hair into 4 sections and put leave-in conditioner followed by setting lotion on each section. The conditioner keeps it from flaking, and you can put a lot on if you like. Also, the more setting lotion and gel you use, the more your hair will shrink when dry. Next put large clips/ponytail holders in to keep the sections.

Step 3: Remove the clip from one section.  Take a small amount of hair ( about 1 inch of hair) and put a dime sized amount of gel. Wrap Hair around straw and keep in place with a bobby pin. (This part is a little tricky if you want spiral curls. Start at the bottom of the straw and wrap hair several times to keep it from unraveling. Then continue to wrap hair up the straw, so the whole straw is covered in hair). Now move on to the next section and continue until all hair is rolled up. Then it takes 5-6 hours to dry or 1 hour under the hooded dryer, as long as you use small enough sections in the straw roller.

Step 4: Then you take down the curls once dry. Next separate the curls into 2 or 3 curls using the oils. I also use alcohol free hair spray.

Below are pics of my first time trying this transitional style.

Transitioning from relaxed hair to NATURAL hair

I was wearing micro braids in my hair, when I decided to go natural, impulsively. I was planning on chopping all the relaxed hair off, and then start fresh. I really started talking it up to all my friends and co-workers. Well, one of my friends was already all natural. She mentioned that, if she could do it again, she would have transitioned so that she wouldn't have to go through an awkward phase of suddenly losing tons of length.

It was a light bulb moment for me.

My younger sister had just done the big chop (and it was beautiful), but now I was starting to consider a different route--transitioning YAY!!!

So I had to do some research, and of course trial and error, a very tried and true/reliable method. So, that is what this blog is all about. My sister and I taking tons of pics, researching, and trial and error methods on transitioning and natural hair.

At the top is a picture of me on my third try of a "tried and true" transitioning protective style-- The Straw Set. Below is a picture of my beautiful younger sister and her brand new natural do. Don't worry, I asked her permission to post it.

More pics and research as well as methods coming soon!!!! Also what I didn't mention is why I choose to go natural. That will be at a later date, with natural hair products.
